Curious About Caring For People With Disabilities

March 27th, 2010

Caring for people with disabilities takes a lot of time, care, and patience. For a many of disabled individuals, their disabilities are caused by accidents, injuries, or diseases resulting in permanent disability. This causes a total change from their previous lifestyle. In many instances, the disabled individual is totally dependent upon the caregiver. The needs of the person with a disability are more detailed than just their obvious physical limitations. The person assisting the disabled individual must understand and be sensitive each of these needs.

In many instances the person with a handicap may feel as though they have no value as a human being. They too may feel no hope or that they are not worth anything. They may also think that they are not a whole individual because they are not able to independently take care of their needs. This in turn will cause them to feel as they are a problem to their caregiver. The provider of care should constantly get them to participate in activities that add to the needs of the whole family. The handicapped individual should constantly hear that they are loved and that they are a valued member of the family. The disabled person needs to be shown respect and allowed to retain their dignity.

The handicapped people are likely to shut themselves off from society. They may fear being mocked by people who are not friends or family. They may also be scared that they will be snubbed by people because of their handicap. All efforts should be attempted by the provider of care to encourage the individual to attend social gatherings. The caregiver should be willing to take the individual to see their friends. The provider of care should permit the individual to visit with friends alone to encourage them to be independent.

Many individuals with handicapping conditions have faith in God. The caregiver should let them continue to attend the church services of their choice. The handicapped individual should continue to participate in religious activities such as meetings, Bible study, and get-togethers’ at lunch. The provider should not force the person to switch their place of worship just for convenience. For these individuals, church is where they are at peace and where they feel comfortable.

Because of their handicap, the individual is not always able to keep the house tidy or prepare meals. The provider of care should be willing to cook meals and do other household chores so that the house will look nice to visitors. The caregiver should think about hiring a person part time to help with cleaning the house.

Shopping for the handicapped person may be difficult. If so, the provider of care should do the shopping as needed. The caregiver should be sensitive to the likes and dislikes of the person. They should also have knowledge of any allergies the individual has to food or chemicals.

The handicapped person maybe required to frequently go to doctor visits to have check ups to closely watch their health. The provider of care should be able to give the physician important information regarding any problems that the person could be experiencing since their last visit. The provider of care may have to explain the doctor’s recommendations upon completion of the visit.

Caring for people with disabilities requires a person who is concerned about the well being of the handicapped individual. The provider of care must understand that a person with disabilities requires care that goes deeper than the bodily handicap. They must care whole person not just their handicap. Aerobics are a good cardiovascular exercise that exert the bigger muscles continually.  Not only do aerobic workouts burn the fat, it keeps your metabolism up afterwards.   Just after 15 minutes of the exercise your glycogen burns off producing glucose, which then uses oxygen to generate energy by burning fat.

Some aerobic activities that burn fat are cycling, climbing stairs, and jogging, as opposed to golf, basketball, or doubles tennis which aren’t considered aerobic because they include pauses. While sprinting is only a brief burst of energy, running is continual which makes it an aerobic activity. Early in the morning, on an empty stomach is the best time to do aerobics. The reason is during the night, the glycogen burned what you ate. You start burning the fat sooner when you haven’t eaten. Regularly, exercise moderate to intense levels for about 30 minutes 4-5 days a week. If you don’t achieve some regularity then it will be hard to find the motivation to keep going.

In your home is where most aerobics are able to be done. One of the best activities to try is bike riding because it strengthens the legs, burns calories, and pumps the heart. Jogging and rollerblading are just as cheap and effective too. Or you can just put your iPod with you and just go out for a long walk. As you set goals for yourself, increase the amount of workout time every day.  Another easy and fun way is to find some good stairs and walk up and down till you no longer can even walk.   Swimming is another one that keeps your whole body fit while putting pressuring your joints and raising your heartbeat. While working outside weeding the garden or even mowing your lawn you are exercising your body in a fun and different way.

Not only are these activities good for your body but they’re inexpensive and easy to do. Aerobics benefit you in many ways, such as, Increasing strength in the respiratory muscles Strengthening and enlarge the heart muscle and improve its pumping The circulation of blood and the red blood cells are improved Reducing stress and depression The muscles are improved by the level of endurance and stamina you achieve To sum it up, your chance of heart attacks is lessened with aerobics. Aerobic exercises are a fantastic way to stay healthy and in shape, while toning your muscles and burning your fat!
